History of the Diamond J Ranch
The ranch was built in the late 1920s, by Julia Bennet. Originally from back East she stayed in several guest ranches on the Gallatin side where Big Sky Ski Resort is now. Launching her dream in the early 1930’s, she stayed at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City during the winter to sell vacation spots at the Diamond J for the following summer.
Julia would go on to start a second guest ranch in Arizona so that her summertime guests had a place to go in the winter.
In the 1950’s Julia retired and sold the Diamond J to four of her guests who eventually built summer homes nearby. Those guests/owners found buyers when an unsuspecting family came to stay in 1959. Pete and Jinny Combs fell in love with the Madison Valley and the lifestyle and moved to the ranch with their 5 children, 3 horses, and 2 dogs in 1960.
Running the ranch for over 50 years, Pete and Jinny were lively hosts in the traditional dude ranch era. Gia, the Combs’ daughter, took over in 2013 and now runs the ranch with her husband Victor and son Diego. Her daughter Carina and husband James, along with their 2 children, live on the ranch as well.
