Madison Duathlon – 8th Annual

July 6, 2019 – The Madison Duathlon (bike/run) connects Ennis and Virginia City – a pairing with roots that go back to the wild west gold rush years and continues today.  This has become a popular point to point race through the Tobacco Root Mountains taking participants from the Madison Valley to the Ruby Valley.

The race begins with the biking leg on main Street in Ennis on the banks of the Madison River.  Riders will ride the back roads, first on asphalt and then on good quality gravel roads along the Shining Mountains Loop Road and up the Axolotl lake Road.  With a 1,000 foot gain in elevation (from 5,000 to 6,000) and a two mile “burner” uphill, this is a great test of your conditioning!

At Twin Lakes, bikers jump off and hit the ground running a one mile uphill with a six mile downhill stretch into Virginia City, Montana.  The running course is a dirt/gravel road that should be no problem for runners.  The final leg takes you onto  the Main Street of Virginia City.  Run between the boardwalks of Montana’s original Territorial Capitol from 1865 to 1875 and finish the race on the steps of the oldest operating county capitol in Montana.

Family and friends will be waiting in this vintage gold rush town, having downed ice cream and making a stop at Cousin’s Candy shop – no doubt they will save you some.  It is a great course that combines scenic vistas, wildlife, western history and elevations that test your skills.
